1. What exactly is Creating Keepsakes University (CKU) and how much does it cost?
Creating Keepsakes University (CKU) is a four-day event featuring hundreds of hours of classes and activities for students to enjoy, including a complete album track, special à la carte classes, layout competitions, one-of-a-kind crops, and access to the highest caliber of industry experts and products in the industry.
In 2009, there are two awesome venues to choose from—
high-energy, CKU-Nashville (May 27–30) and internationally renowned, CKU-Provo (August 5–8).
The education gained at CKU is skill-enhancing and creativity-building, as well as motivating and inspiring—a one-of-a-kind scrapbooking experience.
CKU offers plenty of extracurricular activities as well. Students can expect to hang out at the opening kick-off bash, attend crop parties, join a dorm if they choose and make lifelong friends, participate in hands-on Inspiration Stations from leading manufacturers in the industry, and shop at their leisure at local stores.
Features of CKU:
• CKU is designed for any scrapbooker who wants to learn techniques, meet favorite celebrities, and build friendships with other passionate crafters.
• Tuition to CKU is $395 per student.
• Students get to choose one album track and all of the student body will receive the same core classes.
• Every student can attend all extracurricular activities, including the evening programs and crops, where they'll have loads of fun as they scrapbook and hang out with other students.
2. How is CKU different from a convention?
CKU is a private, more structured, retreat-type event with a timeline of activities, rather than the open forum of shopping and classes from vendors that is found at conventions and other consumer shows. Featuring smaller and more exclusive classes, CKU offers a unique educational experience for as many as 500 students who register months in advance. The quality of the education students receive at CKU is unmatched by any other consumer trade shows and local classes. CKU classes are meant to build scrapbooking skills and techniques rather than simply sell specific products.
Plus, the social atmosphere at every CKU is unique in that students are surrounded by the same scrapbooking enthusiasts for the length of the event. Students can build long-lasting friendships and enjoy a close camaraderie with others who share their passion.
3. Is there a chance I won’t make it in to the most popular classes?
Due to popular student demand, students no longer have to fight to get into the class of their choice; every student will receive the same core classes at different times to enhance the experience for everyone. In 2009, students have the opportunity to attend classes and complete an album workshop. Take classes on Friday, and an album workshop on Saturday OR start with an album workshop Friday and finish with individual classes on Saturday.
4. How do I register for CKU?
Registration for CKU is available online only.
CKU- Nashville—Registration opens February 4, 2009 at 8 p.m. EST.
CKU-Provo – Registration opens April 22, 2009 at 8 p.m. EST.
Be sure to watch the CKU web site for registration details and additional information. On the evening of registration, a yellow “Register Now” button will appear on the CKU home page. Click this button to begin the registration process. You'll be prompted to create a profile and pay for tuition. You’re now a registered student, and can choose an album track to complete your class schedule.
5. What scrapbooking supplies should I bring to CKU?
Be sure to mark your supplies clearly with your name, pack light, and bring these essential materials:
Additional, optional supplies include a camera, paper and pen to take notes, and the tools you can’t live without, such as eyelet setting tools.
Bring to class: Bring these materials to every class, and be sure to check class descriptions on our web site to see if the professor requests you bring any specific photos or additional supplies or tools.
Plan ahead: The CKU campus will be a hive of activity, and space is limited (especially at the crops). It's always a good idea to plan ahead for the pages you want to make at the crops, and bring paper and photos according to the projects you’re planning on.
Tip: If you're coming with a friend, we suggest that you coordinate which supplies you'll each bring, and share with each other.
6. I am traveling to CKU by airplane. Do FAA regulations permit me to bring my scrapbooking scissors?
FAA regulations do not permit passengers to bring scissors or cutting instruments of any kind in carry-on luggage. However, they may be packed in checked baggage. View the FAA homepage (Insert link http://www.faa.gov/) to read about airline security measures, or view Transportation Security Administration (link to http://www.tsa.gov/ ) for more key travel tips and guidelines.

16. Is it safe to purchase products or services from other event attendees?
When planning to attend a CK event, you may meet groups or individuals online on various message boards or in person, selling CKU products or services. Creating Keepsakes does not sanction or accept responsibility for these activities-- they are conducted independently by outside sources. We do want to warn you that there have been problems in the past where attendees have paid for products they didn't receive. We urge you to use your best judgment when purchasing items from independent groups or individuals.

17. Can I arrange to swap projects with fellow attendees?
As you prepare for a CKU event, you may want to swap items at the event, such as ribbon, tags or cards, with groups or individuals you meet online. Independent swaps are not planned or conducted by Creating Keepsakes, and we do not accept responsibility for these activities. We urge you to use your best judgment when arranging activities with independent groups or individuals.

DORM CONTESTS
Judging will take place Thursday, 9:30 pm - 10:30 pm at the Midnight Campus Crop
A highlight of CKU, experience all the fun and hype of meeting fellow scrappers by participating in the Dorm Contests. Rally and register a dorm of 6-10 students then compete in the most creative contests.
Join a dorm to show your school spirit! Be creative, have fun and win great prizes. Participating in the Dorm Contests is optional, but we highly recommend it as a way to meet new people, both before CKU and at the event. For those who choose not to participate, you'll be impressed by the creativity of others and enjoy the evening entertainment that each group has to offer.
Important details at a glance:
CKU-Nashville: April 27, 2009
finalists will be notified by May 4, 2009
CKU-Provo: July 6, 2009
finalists will be notified by July 13, 2009
Step 1. Rally Your Dorm
Gather together a group of fellow CKU attendees (minimum of six students, maximum of 10), and "form your dorm". Join with friends or sign up with other students online through the CKU message board or other popular chat rooms. This is a great way to meet new people and include students who may be attending CKU on their own. Don't let the name "dorm" fool you-you don't have to room with any of your dorm members!
Step 2. Register Your Dorm
Choose one person as the main contact for your dorm. Your dorm contact should register your complete dorm by sending your final dorm name and a list of names and e-mail addresses for each member in your dorm to cku. Please type "Dorm Registration" and which CKU location you are attending in the subject line of your e-mail. Be sure to specify this same information in the body copy of your e-mail too.
Because of the volume of e-mails we receive from dorms, we ask that you please only register your dorm when it is finalized. We will only accept one e-mail registering each dorm name and will not accept changes to that name after your dorm is registered. Submit your registration after you have finalized your official dorm name and have the minimum requirement of six members. Don't worry! We will accept emails to add additional members to your dorm and encourage you to do so if you find a student who would like to join your dorm.
To add members to your dorm, drop us an email with any additional members' names and e-mail addresses to add to your dorm. When we receive your e-mail, we'll reply with a confirmation. If you do not receive this confirmation e-mail, please wait 3 business days then resubmit your information.
We encourage you to register your dorms with us before you arrive at CKU. Early registration is one way we can guarantee goodies for all those who participate.
Step 3. Choose to participate in any of the following contests:
With the exception of the dorm name and cheer/song contest, you will sign up to enter Dorm Contests at the event. Your dorm contact should visit the Information Desk to enter your dorm into any additional contests. Sign up for contest submissions by 5:30 p.m. on Thursday.
Winners will be rewarded with fun prizes, provided by our dorm sponsors. And even if you don't win in any of the categories, you'll still receive a dorm participation gift.
NAME AND CHEER SONG CONTEST
"We've got spirit, yes we do, we've got spirit, how about you?" Come up with a creative name for your dorm and a fun cheer or song to go along with it, and you may be on your way to winning some great prizes, provided by our dorm sponsors! Once you've registered, e-mail your dorm name and cheer/song to cku and we'll reply with an e-mail confirming your entry receipt. Please allow three business days for a reply. If you do not hear from us after three business days, only then should you resubmit your entry. Please use the following deadlines for each event:
CKU-Nashville: finalists will be notified by May 4, 2009
CKU-Provo: finalists will be notified by July 13, 2009
As you prepare your cheer, you have the freedom to use your creativity. A cheer can be a chant, cheer or song-it's up to you! At past CKUs, cheer performances have incorporated costumes; included props; included actions and/or minor stunts (Please be careful!); and included music. (You must provide your own music on CD. We even suggest you bring a portable CD player just to be safe!) Don't feel obligated (or inhibited) by what other past performances have included. Ultimately, we want you to use your creativity and most of all have fun! Please note that throwing candy is prohibited.
NAME BADGE CONTEST
Show your CKU spirit and wear it with flare! Tie together your dorm's theme with some fun name badges that let everyone know who you are. Strive for more than just a "Hello, my name is" sticker. Try sashes or necklaces...let your creativity shine! Be sure your name badges actually bear your names, then wear them with pride throughout the event.
DRESS CONTEST
Dress to impress by taking your dorm to the next level with creative apparel for each member, such as themed shirts, hats, accessories or any combination you choose. You'll enter the contest at the event, so come to the Campus Crop decked out in your most festive gear to compete for the title of the most creative overall team costumes.
TABLE CENTERPIECE CONTEST
At the Campus Crop on Thursday, you'll have the opportunity to decorate your dorm's table with your own unique centerpieces. Remember to enter your submission at the Information Desk so our CKU photographers will know to visit your table. Then, if you catch the eye of our panel of judges, you'll be rewarded!
If your dorm plans on sitting together as a group at the Kick Off Bash on Thursday night, at the crop on Friday night, or at Commencement on Saturday night, you'll want to meet as a group early to secure your place in line. Tables will be filled on a first-come, first-serve basis. We cannot guarantee separate tables for every dorm, so be sure to arrive early so you can enter the ballroom together.
JUDGING
CKU staff members will make their way around the ballroom to take pictures of your dorm at the Campus Crop on Thursday night, 9:30 p.m. - 10:30 p.m. Judges will review these pictures as they finalize their decisions, so it's important you don't let the photographers pass you by. If your name badge, apparel or centerpiece has special details you would like to have considered, please make sure that we include those details in the pictures. Make sure your dorm members get their picture taken as a group if you want to be included in the judging! (While we encourage all of your dorm members to be present, we recognize that some of your dorm members may be attending evening classes. Include as many dorm members as possible for your pictures.)
Dorm name and cheer/song contest entries will be judged by a panel of Creating Keepsakes staff members, then narrowed down to three finalists who will perform at the Kick Off Bash on Thursday night. These finalists will be notified three weeks before CKU. Other Dorm Contests will be judged by a panel of teachers and sponsors with the help of photographs taken at the Campus Crop on Friday night.
In each category, judges will score submissions based on creativity, innovative use of materials and overall theme. Our judges will be looking for the quality of your ideas, not the amount of money you spend! Please be aware that the CKU logo is trademarked and should not be used on your submissions.
Winning dorms will be announced at Commencement on Saturday night. If your dorm is chosen as a winner, your whole dorm does not need to be present to claim prizes. However, the dorm representative who claims your prizes will assume responsibility for distributing the prizes to each member.
POSTER CONTEST
Entries due Friday at 5 p.m. at the CKU Information Desk
Show your creativity by entering the poster contest! If you're staying on campus, decorate a poster with your roommates or submit your own entry in any of these three categories:
1. Best Use of Location Theme: What makes our CKU host city Nashville wonderful? Create a poster that celebrates the local flavor.
2. Most School Spirit. Be true to your school and show us how excited you are to be a CKU student!
3. Tribute to a Sponsor, Instructor or Celebrity Expert. Get creative as you tell us why you love a specific CKU sponsor, instructor or celebrity expert.
Contest Sponsors:

To enter the Poster Contest, submit your original poster created on your own or with your CKU roommates. You must be a registered CKU student, and you are limited to one contest entry per guest room, maximum of four participants per entry. Please take note of the weight distribution on your posters. Posters will be displayed on easels, and we wouldn't want your work of art to fall off and get damaged! Three-dimensional items must not extend further than one foot. Maximum poster size is 22"x 28". Entries will be judged on creativity, originality and quality of work.
To apply, fill out the CKU Honor Society application form included in your registration packet, then attach the form to the back of your poster. We will accept entries until 5 p.m. on Friday. Posters will be on display and judged during Friday night's crop. Prizes will be awarded to one winning poster in each category at Commencement on Saturday night. SPONSOR APPRECIATION CONTEST
Entries due Saturday at 1 p.m. at the CKU Information Desk
Create a thoughtful card, or other item as a way to thank your CKU teachers and sponsors for all the time, effort and cost of supporting CKU! Then enter it in the Sponsor Appreciation Contest for your chance to win prizes!
Important details at a glance:
Once you get to CKU, you'll be amazed at how much our sponsors have done to prepare for you. They're busy working on their classes and projects, even brushing up on the latest techniques to show you. Our CKU sponsors do so much to make your experience enjoyable, without them, CKU would not be such a success. Make plans to enter the Sponsor Appreciation Contest as a way to thank our teachers and sponsors for all the time, effort and cost of supporting CKU! Most importantly look for a meaningful way to THANK the sponsors that have done so much in preparation for this event. Write a gracious note that will brighten their day, or create a collage that conveys how much you appreciate them and their efforts.
Pair up with one friend, or work individually. Visit the CKU Information Desk at the event to sign up for the sponsor you will be thanking. Your challenge is to muster the creativity to compose the best card thanking your assigned sponsor. (Feel free to use some of those generous product donations they've given you!) You'll have until Saturday at 1 p.m. to return your masterpiece. Please remember that your card will be sent to the sponsor and must be "mail friendly".
Cards will be judged on creativity, originality, craftsmanship and journaling. There will be a first, second and third place winner. All cards that are submitted will be entered in a raffle for two random drawings. Contest rules and entry forms will be available at the CKU Information Desk. Prizes will be supplied by Creating Keepsakes and awarded at Commencement on Saturday night. Need not be present at Commencement to win, however, if a prize is awarded to a group entry, the person who claims your prize will assume responsibility for distributing the prizes to the other member of the group.
